"HOW TO STAY AFLOAT AND SUCCEED IN STORMY BUSINESS WATERS"BY Dr. A. Gordon Ray, President Horizons Unlimited Intl. Today's business environment is a raging sea of brutual competition, frantic change and unbelievable stress. Many companies which were once successful winners are now being battered and beaten by the comptetition and some are sinking or have sunk into the raging ocean of today's business sea. Recent and reliable studies reveal that 70% of present small businesses and even impressive retailers will fail in the early years of this century and that, the vast majority of new busineses fail in less than five years. These are truly perilous times on the sea of business. Why do so many businesses fail? In my capabity as a business consultant I have found there are several basic reasons. Many from the top down have lost consciousness of what their specific course is. In other words: "what is our definite and specific mission and purpose as a business? What is the quality of our products and services? What is the promotional mode of the presentation and advertisement of our products and services? In that advertisement and promotion process do we succeed inpresenting a unique presentation of who we are and what we provide that sets us apart from the crowd? How effective is our cost control process? And - one of the most extremely vital aspects of our business - what is the level of our customer service and satisfaction"? And - how do we measure that? Do we have a customer satisfaction response questionaire and statistics compilation process? I find that, when asked, many managers and most employees can't articulate exact answers to questions of what they are in business for. What do we want to - and are trying to achieve"? "And, in a down to earth - "egos" aside - are we achieving it"? These are questions that have to be clearly and constantly asked from the top down and constantly reinforced. If a business doesn't have a clear understanding of its mission, purpose, present performance and fulfillment level there is a lost sense of direction and a grave danger of sooner or later sinking in the current and waves on the stormy business sea. If the candid and realistic answers to the foregoing questions are unknown or negative then immediate steps have to be taken to make a correction in course. Too often this is not done. If the answer is positive, then another question is imperative: "what do we need to do to do it better, be more unique, creative, innovative and responsive to changing customer wants and needs"? This is another point at which many successful companies begin to fail. They become smug and complacent in their success. They make a false assumption that by continuing to do what they are doing the results will continue to be as they are. This is not true in a frantically, speed of light, changing business environment. Today's solutions won't work for tomorrow's challenges. It's when they are thriving and successful that wise companies seek the expertise of a capable and proven outside consultant who can provide fresh, new and expansive insights, processes, innovations and creative ideas to keep them on the cutting edge - a trend setter rather than a follower"! The old saying: "If it "aint" broke- don't fix it" is a misnomer. The wise principle and my philosophy in today's business is: "Fix it before it breaks". These are questions to ask, and ways to stay afloat, soar, and succeed on the raging, treacherous seas of today's business.
